Which poet won the 1979 Nobel Prize in Literature for his visionary poetry?

The story behind the answer

Odysseas Elytis won the 1979 Nobel Prize in Literature for his poetry, which depicts Greek tradition with sensuous strength and intellectual clarity while expressing the modern struggle for freedom and independence.

Elytis was the pen name of Odysseas Alepoudelis, born in 1911 on the island of Crete. He became one of the leading representatives of Greece’s generation of the 1930s and developed a highly visual poetic style shaped by sunlight, the Aegean landscape, mythology, and modern history.

His best-known long poem is Axion Esti, published in 1959. The work combines lyrical, biblical, and liturgical elements and became an important part of modern Greek cultural life.

Giorgos Seferis was Greece’s first Nobel Literature laureate, winning in 1963. Elytis followed sixteen years later. Czesław Miłosz and Yannis Ritsos were major poets, but neither was the 1979 laureate.
