Which author won the 1982 Nobel Prize in Literature for richly imaginative writing?

The story behind the answer

Gabriel García Márquez won the 1982 Nobel Prize in Literature for novels and short stories in which the fantastic and the realistic combine in a richly imaginative world.

The Colombian author became internationally famous for One Hundred Years of Solitude, published in 1967. The novel follows several generations of the Buendía family in the fictional town of Macondo and is a defining work of literary magical realism.

García Márquez’s Nobel citation praised his narratives, which combine fantasy and reality while reflecting the life and conflicts of a continent. He was also a journalist, political commentator, and author of Love in the Time of Cholera.

Borges and Vargas Llosa were also major Latin American writers, but neither won in 1982. Borges never received the Nobel Prize, while Vargas Llosa won it in 2010. Octavio Paz was the 1990 laureate.
