Who won the 2019 Open Championship at Royal Portrush?
Answer
Shane Lowry
Answer
Shane Lowry
Shane Lowry won the 2019 Open Championship at Royal Portrush.
The Irish golfer finished on 269, or 15 under par, to win the 148th Open Championship by six strokes over England's Tommy Fleetwood. Lowry's four rounds were 67, 67, 63 and 72. His remarkable third-round 63 gave him a commanding lead, and he held firm through wet, windy conditions in the final round to lift the Claret Jug.
The championship was played from July 18–21, 2019, on the Dunluce Links at Royal Portrush in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. It was only the second time the Open had been held at Portrush; the first was in 1951, when England's Max Faulkner won. The 2019 event therefore marked the Open's return to Northern Ireland after a 68-year gap.
Lowry's victory was especially popular with local and Irish supporters. It was his first major championship, and he became the first golfer from the Republic of Ireland to win the Open since Padraig Harrington's 2008 victory. Rory McIlroy was among the prominent players in the field, but he did not win.
