Who won the 2018 World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship?
Answer
Phil Mickelson
Answer
Phil Mickelson
Phil Mickelson won the 2018 World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship. He defeated Justin Thomas in a playoff at Club de Golf Chapultepec after both players finished 16 under par.
The tournament was held from March 1–4, 2018, in Naucalpan, just outside Mexico City. Mickelson secured the title on the first playoff hole, the par-4 17th, ending a nearly five-year winless drought on the PGA Tour. It was his third World Golf Championships victory.
The result was notable because Thomas had won the Honda Classic the previous week and was one of the leading young players in the field. Mickelson’s victory also made him the first golfer to win the Mexico Championship twice; his earlier WGC title came in 2009, when the event was known as the WGC-CA Championship.
A common mix-up is confusing this tournament with the 2017 edition, which was won by Dustin Johnson. Johnson later won the 2019 Mexico Championship, while Mickelson’s 2018 playoff victory remains the event’s defining finish.
