Who won the 1999 WWF Royal Rumble match by last eliminating Stone Cold Steve Austin?

The story behind the answer

Vince McMahon won the 1999 WWF Royal Rumble match by last eliminating Stone Cold Steve Austin.

The match was built around the rivalry between McMahon and Austin, who had been feuding throughout late 1998 and early 1999. McMahon entered at number two, while Austin entered at number one, making their long time in the match especially notable.

McMahon’s victory was controversial because he spent much of the match avoiding direct combat. The result led to further conflict over who would challenge WWF Champion The Rock at WrestleMania XV. McMahon eventually surrendered his title opportunity, and The Corporation’s association with the match became part of the continuing storyline.

The 1999 Royal Rumble took place at the Arrowhead Pond in Anaheim, California. It is often remembered less for the winner’s wrestling performance than for the dramatic Austin–McMahon rivalry surrounding the event.
