Who won the 1999 U.S. Open at Pinehurst?

The story behind the answer

Payne Stewart won the 1999 U.S. Open at Pinehurst. He finished at 1-under-par 279, one stroke ahead of Phil Mickelson at Pinehurst Resort’s Course No. 2 in North Carolina.

The championship was played from June 17–20, 1999, on a demanding par-70 layout. Stewart reached the final hole with a narrow lead and faced a difficult 15-foot par putt. He holed it to secure the title without the need for a Monday playoff.

The victory was Stewart’s second U.S. Open title and third major championship. His first U.S. Open came in 1991 at Hazeltine, and he had also won the 1989 PGA Championship. The 1999 triumph was especially meaningful after he had lost a four-stroke 54-hole lead at the previous year’s U.S. Open.

Stewart died in a plane crash four months later, in October 1999, and therefore never defended his title in 2000. His distinctive knickerbockers, colorful caps, and sportsmanship made him one of golf’s most recognizable champions.
