Who won the 1969 Australian Open women's singles title, the first in the Open Era?

The story behind the answer

Margaret Court won the 1969 Australian Open women's singles title, the first Australian Open of the Open Era.

Court defeated defending champion Billie Jean King 6–4, 6–1 in the final at Brisbane's Milton Tennis Centre. The victory gave Court her eighth Australian women's singles title and her 14th major singles championship overall.

The 1969 tournament was historically important because it was the first Australian Open—and the final Grand Slam tournament—to admit both amateurs and professionals. The event was still played on grass, and the tournament's geographic isolation and holiday scheduling meant that some leading international players remained absent.

A common mix-up is to identify King as champion because she reached the final as defending champion. Evonne Goolagong did not win this edition, while Virginia Wade was not the finalist. Court later became one of the most successful players in tennis history, winning 24 major singles titles.
