Who won the 1913 Nobel Prize in Literature for deeply sensitive, fresh, and beautiful verse?

The story behind the answer

Rabindranath Tagore won the 1913 Nobel Prize in Literature for his deeply sensitive, fresh, and beautiful verse.

Tagore was an Indian writer, poet, composer, philosopher, and educator from Bengal. The Swedish Academy specifically praised his English-language version of Gitanjali, a collection of devotional poems first published in Bengali in 1910.

Tagore became the first Asian Nobel laureate in any category. He translated many of his poems into English himself, helping introduce his work to European readers. His literary career also included novels, short stories, essays, and plays.

A common mix-up is confusing Tagore’s Nobel year with the year he wrote India’s national anthem. “Jana Gana Mana” was composed in 1911, two years before his Nobel award.
