Who won golf's CJ Cup at Nine Bridges in 2017?

The story behind the answer

Justin Thomas won golf’s CJ Cup at Nine Bridges in 2017.

The inaugural CJ Cup was played at the Club at Nine Bridges on Jeju Island, South Korea, from October 19–22, 2017. Thomas opened with a spectacular 9-under-par 63, then followed with rounds of 74, 70 and 72 to finish at 9-under 279.

Thomas did not win in regulation. He tied Australia’s Marc Leishman and defeated him in a playoff, making a birdie on the second extra hole, the par-5 18th. Cameron Smith finished third, one stroke behind the playoff participants. The event was notable as the first official PGA Tour tournament held in South Korea.

A common mix-up is confusing the 2017 result with later CJ Cup editions. Thomas also won the tournament in 2019, when it was again played at Nine Bridges, but his first CJ Cup victory came in the 2017 inaugural event. The tournament was part of the early 2017–18 PGA Tour schedule, despite being played during the 2017 calendar year.
