Who were the Montgolfier brothers who pioneered the first practical hot-air balloons?

The story behind the answer

The pioneers of the first practical hot-air balloons were Joseph-Michel and Jacques-Étienne Montgolfier.

The brothers were paper manufacturers from Annonay, France. Their experiments with heated air led to a public demonstration of an unmanned balloon on 4 June 1783. They later developed larger envelopes capable of carrying animals and people.

Joseph-Michel was the more inventive experimenter, while Jacques-Étienne contributed engineering and manufacturing skill. Their work helped establish ballooning before hydrogen balloons became a competing technology.

A common mix-up is to call the brothers the inventors of all balloons. The Robert brothers and Jacques Charles developed hydrogen balloons soon afterward, while the Montgolfiers’ machines relied on heated air. The word “Montgolfière” remains a French term for a hot-air balloon.
