What is the main purpose of a hot-air balloon’s rip panel during landing?

The story behind the answer

The main purpose of a hot-air balloon’s rip panel during landing is rapid deflation.

A rip panel is a large section of fabric near the top of the envelope that the pilot can open after touchdown. Releasing it allows hot air to escape quickly, removing lift and preventing the balloon from dragging along the ground or rising again in a gust.

The pilot normally operates the panel with a rope or line from the basket. It is used after the basket has contacted the ground, not as the normal method for making small altitude adjustments during flight. The parachute valve handles those routine venting adjustments.

Terminology can vary between manufacturers and balloon designs, and some systems use different deflation-panel arrangements. The underlying purpose remains the same: safely empty the envelope after landing so the crew can recover it.
