Glass joined Walmart in 1976 as executive vice president of finance and planning and later became chief financial officer. He was closely involved in developing the company’s Retail Link system, which used sales data to connect stores, distribution centers, and suppliers.

During Glass’s 12 years as CEO, Walmart’s sales grew dramatically as the company expanded its Supercenter format and strengthened its logistics and information systems. He stepped down in 2000, when H. Lee Scott succeeded him.
