In what city was the first Walmart Supercenter opened?

The first Walmart Supercenter opened in Washington, Missouri, in 1988.

The Supercenter combined the general merchandise of a Walmart discount store with a full supermarket, creating a one-stop shopping format. Its large footprint also allowed Walmart to add services such as a pharmacy, tire and oil center, optical department, photo lab, and leased specialty businesses.

Washington is in Franklin County, west of St. Louis. The city is sometimes confused with Rogers or Bentonville, Arkansas, because Walmart was founded in Rogers and its headquarters has long been in Bentonville. Springfield, Missouri, was another important retail market, but it was not the location of the first Supercenter.

The concept followed Walmart’s earlier Hypermart USA experiment. Hypermart stores were even larger and included groceries and other services, but their size and operating costs created problems. Walmart refined the format and adopted the Supercenter model, which became central to the company’s expansion across the United States.
