Who was the US general commanding the Southwest Pacific Area in WWII?
Answer
Douglas MacArthur
Answer
Douglas MacArthur
The US general commanding the Southwest Pacific Area in World War II was Douglas MacArthur.
MacArthur became Supreme Commander of the Southwest Pacific Area in April 1942, after Allied forces established the command during the Pacific War. His responsibilities covered operations against Japan across Australia, New Guinea, the Bismarck Archipelago, the Philippines, and surrounding areas. He coordinated army, air, naval, and Allied forces in a vast theater separated by thousands of miles of ocean.
MacArthur is associated with the “island-hopping” campaign through New Guinea and the southwestern Pacific. His forces gradually advanced toward the Philippines, returning to Leyte in October 1944 after he had famously promised, “I shall return,” when forced to leave the Philippines in 1942.
He should not be confused with Admiral Chester Nimitz, who commanded the separate Pacific Ocean Areas. William Halsey was a major naval commander under the broader Pacific command structure, while Mark Clark led US forces in the Mediterranean and Italy. MacArthur accepted Japan's surrender aboard USS Missouri on September 2, 1945.
