Which Japanese city was the target of the first atomic bomb used in war?

The story behind the answer

Hiroshima was the Japanese city targeted by the first atomic bomb used in war.

On 6 August 1945, the U.S. B-29 bomber Enola Gay dropped the uranium bomb Little Boy over Hiroshima. The bomb detonated at approximately 8:15 a.m. local time, producing a blast, fires, and radiation that devastated much of the city. Hiroshima was selected as the primary target partly because it had military facilities and had not previously suffered extensive conventional bombing.

This was the first use of a nuclear weapon in armed conflict, but not the first nuclear explosion. The Trinity test in New Mexico had occurred on 16 July 1945 and was the first nuclear detonation. Three days after Hiroshima, the United States dropped Fat Man on Nagasaki.

Kyoto had initially been considered as a target but was removed from the list after intervention by Secretary of War Henry Stimson. Tokyo was not the target of either atomic bombing. Japan announced its surrender on 15 August and signed the formal surrender document on 2 September 1945.
