Which German field marshal commanded Afrika Korps in North Africa?
Answer
Erwin Rommel
Answer
Erwin Rommel
Erwin Rommel commanded the Afrika Korps in North Africa during World War II.
Rommel took command on 6 February 1941, when Germany sent the newly formed Afrika Korps to Libya to reinforce Italy after major defeats by British Commonwealth forces. The initial German force included the 5th Light Division and 15th Panzer Division. His rapid desert maneuvers soon earned him the nickname “the Desert Fox.”
Rommel’s command was closely associated with major battles including the siege of Tobruk and the advance toward Egypt. Technically, the Afrika Korps was part of broader German and Italian formations, and Rommel later commanded Panzer Army Africa and Army Group Africa. Other officers, including Ludwig Crüwell and Hans-Jürgen von Arnim, commanded German forces in the theater at different times, but Rommel is the canonical answer to this question.
Rommel left North Africa permanently in March 1943 after the Axis defeat became unavoidable. The remaining German and Italian forces surrendered in Tunisia two months later.
