Who was the original presenter of the British television programme Dragons' Den?

The story behind the answer

Evan Davis was the original presenter of the British television programme Dragons' Den.

Davis is a British economist, journalist and broadcaster who became widely known through BBC radio and television. He presented Dragons' Den from its launch in 2005, guiding entrepreneurs through their pitches and the often intense questioning from the investors.

The presenter’s role is different from that of the dragons. Davis does not normally decide whether a business receives funding; instead, he introduces the contestants, provides linking commentary and helps viewers follow the negotiations. His calm interviewing style became part of the programme’s early identity.

Davis later became especially associated with BBC current-affairs broadcasting, including Newsnight and the BBC Radio 4 programme Today. Because several presenters have hosted business programmes in the United Kingdom, his Dragons' Den role is sometimes mixed up with other television careers.
