Who was the MVP of Super Bowl XXVI between the Washington Redskins and the Buffalo Bills?

The story behind the answer

Mark Rypien was the MVP of Super Bowl XXVI, leading the Washington Redskins to a 37–24 victory over the Buffalo Bills on January 26, 1992.

Rypien delivered an efficient performance at quarterback, completing 18 of 33 passes for 292 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. His passing helped Washington build a 24–0 lead early in the third quarter and withstand Buffalo’s attempted comeback.

The victory gave Washington its third Super Bowl championship and marked head coach Joe Gibbs’s third title with the franchise. It also ended Buffalo’s run of four consecutive Super Bowl appearances, although the Bills would lose each one.

A common mix-up is confusing Rypien with Washington’s other Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks, Doug Williams and Joe Theismann. Rypien was the starter for the 1991 season and became the only Canadian-born player to win the Super Bowl MVP award. Super Bowl XXVI was played at the Metrodome in Minneapolis.
