Diego Maradona made his professional soccer debut with Argentinos Juniors. He entered the first-team match against Talleres on October 20, 1976, in Buenos Aires, at just 15 years old.

Maradona had already attracted attention as a gifted youth player with Argentinos Juniors, where he was part of the famous “Los Cebollitas” youth side. His senior debut came when coach Juan Carlos Montes brought him on as a substitute during a 1–0 defeat to Talleres. Although his team lost, the appearance marked the beginning of one of soccer’s most celebrated careers.

Maradona remained with Argentinos Juniors until 1981, becoming the club’s outstanding star and one of Argentina’s most prolific scorers. He then transferred to Boca Juniors, where he won the Argentine championship before moving to Barcelona and later Napoli.

A common mix-up is to name Boca Juniors because Maradona became an idol there, or Napoli because he reached the peak of his club career in Italy. Neither was his professional debut club: that distinction belongs to Argentinos Juniors, whose stadium was later renamed in his honor.
