Who was the first person to walk on the Moon during NASA's Apollo 11 mission?
Answer
Neil Armstrong
Answer
Neil Armstrong
Neil Armstrong was the first person to walk on the Moon during NASA's Apollo 11 mission.
Armstrong stepped onto the lunar surface on July 21, 1969, at 02:56 UTC, after descending from the Apollo Lunar Module Eagle. His first words on the surface became one of the most famous quotations in spaceflight. Buzz Aldrin joined him about 19 minutes later, while Michael Collins remained in lunar orbit inside the command module Columbia.
Apollo 11 launched from Florida on July 16, 1969, and fulfilled President John F. Kennedy's goal of landing humans on the Moon before the end of the 1960s. Armstrong and Aldrin spent about two and a half hours outside the lunar module, collecting samples and deploying scientific instruments.
A common mix-up is confusing the first person on the Moon with the first person in space, who was Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin in 1961. Armstrong was also the first person to drive a vehicle on the Moon, using the lunar module's small landing area before the astronauts deployed the lunar rover on later missions.
