Who was the first person to step onto the Moon?
Answer
Neil Armstrong
Answer
Neil Armstrong
Neil Armstrong was the first person to step onto the Moon.
Armstrong climbed down from the Apollo 11 lunar module Eagle on 21 July 1969 UTC, during the first crewed lunar landing. He and Buzz Aldrin spent about two and a half hours outside the module, while Michael Collins orbited above in the command module Columbia.
Armstrong's first words on the lunar surface became one of the most quoted statements in spaceflight history. The astronauts collected lunar samples, photographed the surface, and deployed scientific instruments before returning to Earth on 24 July 1969.
Because the landing occurred on 20 July in the United States but after midnight UTC, references give both 20 and 21 July depending on time zone. Aldrin became the second person on the Moon. Yuri Gagarin was the first human in space, not the first person to reach the lunar surface.
