Answer
Malcolm McLaren
Who was the first manager of the Sex Pistols? Malcolm McLaren was the Sex Pistols’ first manager.
McLaren was an art-school-trained entrepreneur who co-owned the London clothing shop SEX with designer Vivienne Westwood. The shop became an important meeting place for the emerging punk scene and helped shape the Sex Pistols’ provocative visual identity. He became involved with the musicians who developed into the band and eventually managed them.
McLaren helped recruit John Lydon, later known as Johnny Rotten, after seeing him around the shop and inviting him to audition. He also encouraged the group’s confrontational name, image, and presentation, turning the band into a deliberately provocative cultural project as well as a musical act.
He is sometimes described as the band’s “Svengali,” but that wording can overstate his control. The members wrote and performed the music, while McLaren handled management, promotion, and much of the surrounding strategy. His role remained controversial, especially after the band’s break-up and disputes over the group’s history and finances.
