Which hardcore punk band released the 1983 album 'Out of Step'?

The story behind the answer

Minor Threat released the 1983 hardcore punk record Out of Step.

Recorded at Inner Ear Studios in January 1983, the release arrived in April through Dischord Records. It is commonly described as the band’s third EP, although some retrospective critics and reference works call it a studio album. That format distinction does not affect the quiz answer: Minor Threat is the credited artist.

The sessions followed a temporary breakup in 1982 and produced a more elaborate sound than the band’s earliest recordings. Brian Baker joined as a second guitarist, while Steve Hansgen played bass alongside vocalist Ian MacKaye, guitarist Lyle Preslar, and drummer Jeff Nelson. The lyrics focus heavily on alienation, personal conflict, youth frustration, and scene politics.

The record became a landmark of American hardcore and influenced youth crew, post-hardcore, grunge, skate punk, and thrash metal. A frequent mistake is choosing Brian Baker because he appears prominently in the personnel: he played on the record, but he was not the band that released it.
