The punk band that released the 1995 album ...And Out Come the Wolves was Rancid. It was Rancid’s third studio album, released on August 22, 1995, through Epitaph Records.
The album was recorded mainly between February and May 1995 at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley and Electric Lady Studios in New York. Its sound blended melodic punk with strong ska and reggae influences, reflecting bassist Matt Freeman and vocalist-guitarist Tim Armstrong’s earlier work in the influential Berkeley band Operation Ivy.
The record produced three of Rancid’s best-known songs: “Roots Radicals,” “Time Bomb,” and “Ruby Soho.” Those tracks received substantial MTV and radio exposure, helping Rancid reach a much larger audience during the mid-1990s punk revival. Despite interest from major labels, the band stayed with Epitaph, the independent label founded by Bad Religion guitarist Brett Gurewitz.
The album was certified gold in 1996 and platinum in 2004. Its title was taken from a poem in Jim Carroll’s The Basketball Diaries. A common mix-up is associating the album with other 1990s punk bands such as NOFX, Pennywise, or Lagwagon, but its artist is specifically Rancid.
