Who was the first human to walk on the Moon?

The story behind the answer

Neil Armstrong was the first human to walk on the Moon.

Armstrong stepped onto the lunar surface on 21 July 1969 during NASA’s Apollo 11 mission. Because of the time difference between the mission’s location and many places on Earth, the event was watched on 20 July in the United States. His first step followed the landing of the lunar module Eagle in the Moon’s Sea of Tranquility.

Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin spent about two and a half hours outside the lunar module, while Michael Collins remained in lunar orbit in the command module Columbia. Armstrong’s first words on the surface became one of the most famous quotations in spaceflight. Apollo 11 launched from Florida on 16 July 1969 and returned to Earth on 24 July. Armstrong later served as a university professor and remained closely associated with aviation and aerospace engineering until his death in 2012.
