Who was the first captain of the SVU squad?

The story behind the answer

Donald Cragen was the first captain of the Special Victims Unit on Law & Order: SVU. Played by Dann Florek, Captain Cragen commanded the squad from the series premiere in 1999 through most of its first 15 seasons.

Cragen was already an established Law & Order character before SVU began. He had served as a homicide captain in the original series and had appeared during its first three seasons. When the spin-off launched, he brought seniority and institutional knowledge to the new Manhattan unit, supervising detectives including Olivia Benson, Elliot Stabler, John Munch, and Fin Tutuola.

His leadership style was stern but protective. The character was portrayed as a recovering alcoholic and a veteran officer who trusted his detectives while defending them from bureaucratic pressure. Cragen eventually retired from the squad, and Olivia Benson succeeded him as commanding officer. John Munch and Elliot Stabler were detectives, not captains, while Benson became captain only later in the series.
