Who was the first African American to win a Tony Award?

The story behind the answer

Who was the first African American to win a Tony Award? The answer is Juanita Hall.

Juanita Hall became the first African American Tony Award winner in 1950, taking Best Supporting Actress for playing Bloody Mary in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific. The role made her a major Broadway star and earned recognition for a performance that combined comic timing, dramatic warmth, and musical skill.

South Pacific opened on Broadway in 1949 and examined racism, prejudice, and wartime relationships in the Pacific. Hall played Bloody Mary for 1,925 Broadway performances at the Majestic Theatre. She later appeared in another Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, Flower Drum Song, as Madame Liang.

The wording is broader than categories such as Best Actress or Best Featured Actor. Later Black Tony pioneers included Harry Belafonte, Diahann Carroll, Cleavon Little, and James Earl Jones, each of whom was first in a particular acting category. Hall’s 1950 win came earlier than all of those milestones.
