How many Tony Awards did the musical 'Hamilton' win?

The story behind the answer

The musical Hamilton won 11 Tony Awards at the 2016 ceremony.

At the 70th Tony Awards on June 12, 2016, Hamilton converted an exceptional 16 nominations into 11 wins. Its victories included Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical for Lin-Manuel Miranda, Best Original Score, Best Direction of a Musical for Thomas Kail, Best Actor in a Musical for Leslie Odom Jr., and acting awards for Daveed Diggs and Renée Elise Goldsberry.

The show’s 16 nominations remain a Tony record for a production. That number can cause confusion, because nominations and wins are different measures. Hamilton was also nominated in categories where more than one performer from the production competed, so the nomination total cannot simply be treated as the number of awards it could win.

Hamilton’s 11 victories made it the second-most awarded single production at the time, behind The Producers, which won 12 Tonys in 2001. Its haul also helped establish the show as one of Broadway’s defining cultural events of the 2010s.
