Who is the only person to win Tony Awards for acting, choreography, and direction?

The story behind the answer

Tommy Tune is the only person to win Tony Awards for acting, choreography, and direction.

Tune’s first Tony came in 1974 for Featured Actor in a Musical for Seesaw. He later won for choreography and direction, establishing a rare combination of performance and creative leadership. His directing victories included Nine in 1982, while his choreography wins included A Day in Hollywood / A Night in the Ukraine, My One and Only, Grand Hotel, and The Will Rogers Follies.

The achievement is sometimes summarized as winning in four Tony categories, because Tune won both leading and featured acting awards in addition to direction and choreography. He won Best Leading Actor in a Musical for My One and Only in 1983, sharing that production’s choreography credit with Thommie Walsh.

Tune’s 1990 and 1991 seasons were particularly distinctive: he won both Best Direction of a Musical and Best Choreography for Grand Hotel and again for The Will Rogers Follies. He ultimately received ten Tony Awards, including a 2015 Lifetime Achievement Award.
