Who was the English commander captured during the Battle of Jargeau against Joan of Arc’s army?

The story behind the answer

William de la Pole was the English commander captured during the Battle of Jargeau against Joan of Arc’s army.

De la Pole, 1st Duke of Suffolk, was a prominent English nobleman and military leader during the Hundred Years’ War. He commanded the English defense of Jargeau, a strategically important town on the Loire. French forces attacked on 12 June 1429 as part of the campaign to recover territory after the relief of Orléans.

The French assault succeeded, and Suffolk surrendered. He was taken prisoner and later ransomed. His capture was significant because he was one of the highest-ranking English commanders defeated during the Loire campaign.

William de la Pole is easily confused with other English commanders active in Joan’s campaigns, especially John Talbot, who fought at Patay and elsewhere. Jargeau, Meung-sur-Loire, Beaugency, and Patay were separate engagements, although they formed a rapid sequence of French victories in June 1429.
