Which medieval conflict did Joan of Arc’s campaigns form part of?
Answer
The Hundred Years’ War
Answer
The Hundred Years’ War
Joan of Arc’s campaigns formed part of the Hundred Years’ War.
The Hundred Years’ War was a prolonged series of conflicts between England and France, conventionally dated from 1337 to 1453. Joan appeared during its later phase, when English forces and their Burgundian allies controlled much of northern France.
Her military activity in 1429 supported the Valois claimant Charles VII. The relief of Orléans, the Loire campaign, and the march to Reims helped improve the French political and military position, although Joan’s capture in 1430 did not immediately end the war.
The name can mislead readers because the conflict was not one continuous battle lasting exactly a century. It consisted of several phases separated by truces and changing alliances. Joan was therefore a figure in the war’s later campaigns, not its founder or final victor.
