Joan of Arc testified that she was 13 years old when she first heard a heavenly voice. She later identified the voice as belonging to Saint Michael and said that other saints subsequently guided her.
Her testimony about these experiences was recorded during the condemnation trial in Rouen. Joan described receiving religious guidance while she was still living in Domrémy, before she became a soldier or met Charles VII.
The account is associated with Joan's own statements rather than with a modern medical or psychological diagnosis. Medieval trial records preserve her descriptions, but they do not allow historians to independently verify the supernatural nature of the experiences.
Joan's visions became central to both her public identity and her trial. Supporters treated them as evidence of divine mission, while her opponents questioned their authenticity. The trial court ultimately condemned her for heresy, although a later rehabilitation investigation overturned that judgment.
