Who was the central protagonist of C.S. Lewis’s Space Trilogy?

The story behind the answer

Elwin Ransom was the central protagonist of C.S. Lewis’s Space Trilogy. He first appears in Out of the Silent Planet, where he is abducted and taken to the planet Malacandra.

Ransom is a Cambridge philologist, a scholar whose expertise in language becomes crucial to the trilogy’s plot. His ability to learn and interpret languages allows him to communicate with nonhuman civilizations and to understand cultures that the other characters misjudge. He returns in Perelandra, where he confronts a new moral crisis on another planet.

The third novel, That Hideous Strength, shifts much of its attention to Mark and Jane Studdock, so Ransom is less central to that book’s domestic and institutional storyline. This shift can cause confusion about the trilogy’s lead character. Ransom remains the connecting hero of the first two novels and the trilogy’s principal intellectual and moral figure.
