The Last Battle is the final Narnia novel in the internal chronology of C.S. Lewis’s series, and Lewis published it in 1956. It depicts the end of the Narnian world and the final gathering of its loyal characters.
The novel won the Carnegie Medal for children’s literature in 1957. Its plot includes the false Aslan represented by a donkey, the ape Shift, and a conflict that exposes competing ideas of truth and authority.
Publication order differs from some chronological reading lists. The Last Battle was the seventh book published, while The Magician’s Nephew, published in 1955, is often read first in timeline order because it describes Narnia’s creation.
