Who was the British Prime Minister during most of WWII?
Answer
Winston Churchill
Answer
Winston Churchill
Winston Churchill was the British Prime Minister during most of World War II. He became prime minister on 10 May 1940, succeeding Neville Chamberlain, and led Britain until the Conservatives lost the July 1945 general election.
Churchill formed a national coalition government that included Conservatives, Labour members, and Liberals. He also served as Minister of Defence, coordinating Britain’s military and political response during the fall of France, the Battle of Britain, the Blitz, and the wider Allied war effort.
His speeches and radio broadcasts helped maintain public morale, especially in 1940 and 1941, when Britain faced Nazi Germany with limited European support. Churchill worked closely with U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Soviet leader Joseph Stalin at wartime conferences such as Tehran and Yalta.
Neville Chamberlain was prime minister when Britain entered the war in September 1939, but Churchill replaced him in 1940. Clement Attlee served as Churchill’s deputy in the wartime coalition and became prime minister after the 1945 election. Churchill later returned to office from 1951 to 1955.
