Kim Fields played Tootie on the television show The Facts of Life.

Fields portrayed Dorothy “Tootie” Ramsey, one of Eastland Academy’s central students, throughout the NBC sitcom’s run from 1979 to 1988. Tootie was known for her gossip, energetic personality, braces and memorable roller skates, as well as her catchphrase, “We are in trou-ble!”

The character first appeared in the backdoor-pilot episode of Diff’rent Strokes before The Facts of Life became its own series. Fields was still a child when she joined the cast, and producers initially used roller skates partly to make her appear taller on camera. Tootie remained one of the show’s most recognizable characters as the series followed the girls from school life into young adulthood.

Kim Fields later became known for playing Regine Hunter on the sitcom Living Single. She also worked as a television director and appeared in projects including The Upshaws. The most common confusion is mixing up Tootie’s fictional name, Dorothy Ramsey, with the actress’s real name, Kim Fields.
