Who was Rolls-Royce Limited’s first managing director?

The story behind the answer

Claude Johnson was Rolls-Royce Limited’s first managing director.

Johnson joined the company after its formation and played a major role in turning the partnership between Charles Rolls and Henry Royce into a successful, recognizable motor-car business. He was an energetic organizer and marketer, helping establish Rolls-Royce as a premium marque.

He is often associated with the company’s early public image and with the Silver Ghost’s famous reputation for refinement and reliability. Johnson’s business leadership complemented Royce’s engineering work and Rolls’s motoring and aviation interests.

Charles Rolls was the company’s co-founder and an important early director, but he was not its first managing director. Henry Royce was the chief engineer and technical force behind the cars. Ernest Hives became important later, particularly in the company’s engineering and aircraft-engine activities.
