Which Rolls-Royce aircraft engine was used in the British Aerospace Hawk trainer?

The story behind the answer

The Rolls-Royce Turbomeca Adour was used in the British Aerospace Hawk trainer.

The Hawk was designed as a two-seat jet trainer and light combat aircraft, and its production versions used the non-afterburning Adour turbofan. The engine provided the performance needed for advanced pilot training while avoiding the extra complexity and fuel consumption of an afterburner in the trainer configuration.

The Adour was developed jointly by Britain’s Rolls-Royce and France’s Turbomeca. It is also associated with the SEPECAT Jaguar, but the Jaguar used afterburning versions of the engine for combat missions. This shared engine family is why the Adour appears in both training and strike-aircraft histories.

The Hawk first flew in 1974 and became one of the world’s best-known military jet trainers. Its export versions and later derivatives were operated by air forces in many countries, sometimes under local designations.
