Who was Muhammad Ali's longtime trainer during his professional career?

Angelo Dundee was Muhammad Ali’s longtime trainer during his professional boxing career. Dundee worked with Ali from 1960 through most of Ali’s career, helping guide him from promising young boxer to heavyweight champion and international icon.

Dundee first trained Cassius Clay, as Ali was then known, around the beginning of his professional career. He was in Clay’s corner for the 1964 victory over Sonny Liston, when Clay won the world heavyweight title and soon afterward announced his conversion to Islam and name change to Muhammad Ali. Dundee remained a trusted strategist and cornerman through many of Ali’s greatest fights.

Their partnership included bouts against Joe Frazier, George Foreman, Ken Norton, and Leon Spinks. Dundee was especially associated with the 1974 “Rumble in the Jungle” against Foreman, where Ali used the rope-a-dope strategy. Dundee also trained Sugar Ray Leonard, but his most famous long-term relationship was with Ali.
