Who was Muhammad Ali's first wife?
Answer
Sonji Roi
Answer
Sonji Roi
Muhammad Ali's first wife was Sonji Roi.
Ali met Roi, a cocktail waitress, through Herbert Muhammad, who later became his manager. They married on August 14, 1964, roughly a month after their first date. At the time, Ali was still known publicly as Cassius Clay and had recently won the world heavyweight title from Sonny Liston.
Their marriage lasted less than two years and produced no children. The relationship became strained partly because Roi did not adopt the Nation of Islam's expectations about dress and behavior. They divorced on January 10, 1966. Ali later married Belinda Boyd, Veronica Porché, and Yolanda “Lonnie” Williams, which often causes quiz-takers to confuse his first wife with one of his later spouses. Sonji Roi is also portrayed in the 2001 film Ali, played by Jada Pinkett Smith.
