Who was Georgia O'Keeffe's husband and the photographer who championed her early work?
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Alfred Stieglitz was Georgia O'Keeffe's husband and the photographer who championed her early work. Stieglitz first saw some of her abstract charcoal drawings in 1916 and exhibited them at his New York gallery, 291, without initially meeting her.
Their relationship became both personal and professionally important. Stieglitz photographed O'Keeffe repeatedly over many years, producing hundreds of portraits and nudes that helped shape public perceptions of her. They married in 1924, after Stieglitz's divorce from his first wife, Emmy.
Stieglitz was a major figure in American photography and modern art. His galleries introduced American audiences to European avant-garde artists as well as emerging American artists. His support helped O'Keeffe gain visibility, although she later insisted on the independence of her own art.
The couple maintained homes in New York and at Lake George. O'Keeffe continued to develop her own subjects, including flowers, buildings, bones, and landscapes, rather than simply working within Stieglitz's photographic interpretation of her.
