Which Wisconsin town was Georgia O'Keeffe's birthplace near?
Answer
Sun Prairie
Answer
Sun Prairie
Georgia O'Keeffe was born near Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. Her birthplace was a farm near the small city of Sun Prairie, close to Madison, on November 15, 1887. Her parents, Francis and Ida O'Keeffe, raised a large family there.
The Wisconsin setting was very different from the landscapes that later made O'Keeffe famous. She eventually became strongly associated with New Mexico's desert, cliffs, bones, and adobe architecture, but her childhood began in the agricultural Midwest. That contrast helps explain why biographies treat Sun Prairie as an important starting point rather than as a location from her mature career.
Sun Prairie is sometimes confused with Madison because it lies in the Madison metropolitan area. The two are separate Wisconsin communities. O'Keeffe did later study and work in other Midwestern cities, but the canonical birthplace description is “near Sun Prairie,” not simply Madison.
