Which U.S. state was the birthplace of artist Georgia O'Keeffe?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe was born in Wisconsin. Her birthplace was a farmhouse near Sun Prairie, in Dane County, where she was born in 1887.

Although New Mexico became central to O'Keeffe’s identity and artistic imagery, she did not begin her life there. She first encountered the American Southwest during visits in the 1920s and later made New Mexico her permanent home.

O'Keeffe studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League of New York before working as an art teacher. Her early training helped establish the strong draftsmanship visible throughout her career.

The Wisconsin landscape formed part of her early experience, but her mature reputation came from paintings of flowers, New York architecture, and the landscapes, hills, and bones of the Southwest.
