Who was Ford Motor Company’s chief engineer during the development of the Model T?
Answer
Childe Harold Wills
Answer
Childe Harold Wills
Childe Harold Wills was Ford Motor Company’s chief engineer during the development of the Model T.
Wills joined Henry Ford’s early automobile ventures and became a key technical figure at Ford Motor Company. He helped develop the Model T’s engineering, including its vanadium-steel components and practical design for mass production.
Henry Ford is often credited as the Model T’s creator, but Wills was an important engineering collaborator rather than the company’s sole designer. James Couzens was a business executive, while William C. Knudsen joined Ford later and became important in manufacturing management.
Wills later left Ford and founded the automobile company that produced the Wills Sainte Claire. His role in the Model T story is therefore distinct from Ford’s public leadership and the factory innovations associated with Highland Park.
