Who was David Bowie's first wife?
Answer
Angie Barnett
Answer
Angie Barnett
David Bowie’s first wife was Angie Barnett, later known professionally as Angie Bowie. The couple married on 19 March 1970 at Bromley Register Office in London, after meeting through music-industry contacts in the late 1960s.
Angie was an influential presence during Bowie’s early-1970s rise. She helped promote his career, appeared in media interviews and television programs, and became associated with the flamboyant glam-rock world surrounding Bowie and the Spiders from Mars. Bowie dedicated the 1970 single “The Prettiest Star” to her.
Their marriage was openly nontraditional, and Angie later described it as partly a marriage of convenience connected with obtaining permission to work. They had one son, Duncan Jones, born in 1971; he was initially known publicly as Zowie Bowie. David and Angie divorced in 1980.
A common mix-up is confusing Angie with Iman, Bowie’s second wife. Bowie married Iman in 1992, and they remained together until his death in 2016.
