The David Bowie album featuring the instrumental track “Warszawa” is “Low.”
Released by RCA on 14 January 1977, Low was Bowie’s eleventh studio album and the first part of the group of records later called the Berlin Trilogy. “Warszawa” appears on the album’s second side, which is dominated by atmospheric and mostly instrumental pieces rather than conventional pop songs.
The track was written by Bowie and Brian Eno and produced by Bowie and Tony Visconti. Its title refers to Warsaw, Poland, which Bowie visited in 1976. The music was intended to evoke the city’s bleak atmosphere, using slow, haunting textures and wordless vocal passages rather than ordinary lyrical storytelling. Eno developed much of the composition while Bowie was away dealing with legal matters.
Low is often confused with Station to Station or “Heroes,” both nearby landmarks in Bowie’s career. Station to Station came first in 1976, while “Heroes” followed Low in 1977. “Warszawa” belongs specifically to Low and helps explain the album’s radical shift toward ambient, electronic and experimental music.
