Joy Davidman
Answer
Joy Davidman
C.S. Lewis’s wife in the marriage celebrated in 1956 was Joy Davidman.
Joy Davidman was an American writer who became close to Lewis after moving to England. The couple entered a civil marriage in April 1956 so that Davidman could remain in the United Kingdom. A Christian wedding ceremony followed at Holy Trinity Church, Headington, in March 1957, conducted by the Anglican priest Peter Bide.
Davidman’s relationship with Lewis later became widely known through Lewis’s account of grief after her death from cancer in 1960. The events also inspired later books, stage productions, and films, although adaptations differ in detail and emphasis. Lewis had no children with Davidman, but he helped care for her two sons, Douglas and David, from her previous marriage.
