Who was C.S. Lewis’s wife and author of Smoke on the Mountain?

The story behind the answer

Joy Davidman was C.S. Lewis’s wife and the author of Smoke on the Mountain.

Davidman was an American poet, novelist, and essayist born in New York City in 1915. She became acquainted with Lewis through correspondence and later moved to England. The pair entered a civil marriage in 1956, and an Anglican marriage ceremony followed in 1957.

Her book Smoke on the Mountain: An Interpretation of the Ten Commandments was published in 1954. Davidman also wrote fiction and poetry, and her intellectual partnership with Lewis influenced the final period of his life.

Davidman died of cancer in 1960. Lewis later published A Grief Observed, initially under a pseudonym, as a deeply personal response to her death. Their relationship was portrayed in the film Shadowlands, though the film is a dramatization rather than a complete historical record.
