Who was C.S. Lewis’s brother and later biographer?

The story behind the answer

Warren Lewis was C.S. Lewis’s brother and later an important biographer of him.

Warren Hamilton Lewis, known as Warnie, was born in 1895, three years before his brother. The brothers shared a close relationship, lived together for much of their adult lives, and maintained a detailed household life at The Kilns near Oxford. Warren kept diaries that became valuable sources for understanding C.S. Lewis’s activities and friendships.

Warren served in the British Army during the First World War and later worked as a historian. He wrote several books about French history and edited material connected with his brother. His diaries were published after C.S. Lewis’s death and provide firsthand evidence about family events, writing projects, and the author’s routines.

The surname “Lewis” is shared by both brothers, while “Warnie” is Warren’s familiar nickname. Warren should not be confused with Albert James Lewis, their father, or with Lewis’s literary friends Tolkien, Charles Williams, and Owen Barfield.
