Who was chosen as the captain for Team USA for the 2012 Ryder Cup?

The story behind the answer

Davis Love III was chosen as captain for Team USA at the 2012 Ryder Cup.

The Ryder Cup is a biennial match-play competition between teams representing the United States and Europe. Love was selected in January 2011 to lead the American side at the 39th staging, held at Medinah Country Club in Illinois from September 28 to 30, 2012. José María Olazábal captained Europe.

Love was a natural choice because he was a respected American veteran with six Ryder Cup appearances as a player. He had also won the 1997 PGA Championship and was well known for his leadership and long career on the PGA Tour. As captain, he worked with assistant captains including Fred Couples and Mike Hulbert.

The match became famous for Europe’s “Miracle at Medinah” comeback. The United States led 10–6 entering the final day, but Europe won eight singles matches and retained the cup with a 14½–13½ victory. Love later captained the United States again in 2016.
